Manchester United Eye Jan Oblak as Onana Successor in £25.5m Transfer Push

Oblak Named United’s Top Goalkeeping Target

Manchester United’s search for a new goalkeeper appears to be narrowing, with El Nacional reporting that Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak is now the club’s first-choice replacement for Andre Onana. The experienced Slovenian could be set for a Premier League move after more than a decade with Atleti.

“United are ‘very serious’ about signing Oblak and are prepared to table a ‘formal offer’ in the coming weeks.” That offer is expected to be in the region of €30 million (£25.5m), a fee described by the Spanish outlet as “a figure close to Atletico’s expectations for the departure of their goalkeeper.”

At 32, Oblak is no longer a long-term solution, but he remains one of the most consistent shot-stoppers in Europe. A five-time winner of the Zamora Trophy and LaLiga’s Player of the Season in Atlético’s 2020/21 title-winning campaign, his pedigree is beyond question.

Onana Future in Doubt Amid Saudi Interest

Onana’s time at Old Trafford may be nearing an end. After a string of high-profile errors and waning confidence under pressure, his future has been placed in sharp focus. FootMercato recently reported that Onana’s representatives have already held discussions with Saudi club Neom SC.

Further reports from the Manchester Evening News add that new manager Ruben Amorim “decided less than two months into his tenure that United would need a new goalkeeper.” That assessment appears to have accelerated the club’s pursuit of an elite replacement.

Diogo Costa of FC Porto was initially linked, but interest from Manchester City – who are also preparing for the possible departure of Ederson – has complicated matters. With Pep Guardiola circling, United have pivoted towards Oblak.

Atletico Open to Oblak Exit

Oblak remains under contract at Atlético until 2028, but El Nacional claim the club is open to a sale. The report notes that Atleti “will not impose any obstacles if the player expresses his desire to leave,” and that Oblak “is beginning to consider a change of scenery” after 11 seasons in Madrid.

A summer switch to the Premier League could be the ideal final chapter in Oblak’s career at the top. While €30m is still a significant outlay for a player in his early thirties, United are clearly prioritising experience, consistency, and leadership in a position that has become increasingly volatile.

Rashford and Gyokeres Latest

Elsewhere, United’s summer business could stretch beyond goalkeeping reinforcements. TEAMtalk reports that Marcus Rashford is prioritising Champions League football in his decision-making, with Aston Villa and Barcelona both monitoring the situation. If a return is ruled out, United would seek £50m on the open market.

Meanwhile, rumours of Viktor Gyokeres being a ‘done deal’ for United have been played down. The striker now appears more likely to join a domestic rival.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For United fans, this latest Oblak update could be welcomed with a mix of relief and curiosity. Relief, because it’s increasingly clear that Onana isn’t the reliable No.1 many hoped for when he arrived from Inter. Curiosity, because Oblak is a name that commands respect — but also prompts questions about timing, longevity, and strategic planning.

Many supporters will view this as a pragmatic, short-term fix — perhaps what the squad needs after seasons of instability between the posts. While younger options like Diogo Costa offered longer-term upside, the lure of an experienced professional with over 400 senior appearances and European pedigree is hard to ignore.

There is, of course, some risk. Goalkeepers approaching their mid-thirties may not always adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League. But Oblak’s track record suggests he thrives under pressure, and that’s a quality Old Trafford has lacked since the days of peak David De Gea.

The £25.5m fee also seems fair for a player of his calibre. If Oblak does indeed “express his desire to leave,” then United would be wise to move quickly and decisively — before another European heavyweight enters the race.
