Things are getting tough for Enzo Maresca. He needed that victory on Monday night to break his run of 5 league games without a win, but yesterday’s game was another reality check.

The questions in the presser after the game hit hard – he was asked his thoughts on the “big picture” of his team and how they’ve developed since the start of the season, and gave a very positive response:

“I just said, in my opinion, we are a better team that one month ago, two months ago. This kind of moment, these kind of games – for sure, they are going to make us better because we need to live this experience,” the manager said.

“I said two weeks ago; from now on, we can be third, we can be fourth, five or six, the game until the end now can change a little bit. The good thing is that we are focused and we are trying to improve game after game.”

Maresca fools nobody with positive chat

Enzo Maresca interviewed on Sky Sports by James Savundra.

Does anyone really buy that? This team is exactly the same as the team from a month ago or two months ago, with the same flaws, except that it’s now run out of steam and confidence. We weren’t perfect earlier in the season – we still had a lack of midfield depth, a striker who goes on runs without goals and a dodgy keeper – but playing one a week gave us the energy to burst past bad teams.

In what way is the stodgy mess of cowardly play we saw at the Etihad yesterday better than that? It’s the same issues with no positives to cover them up.

We’re not going to go overboard, there’s no doubt that some things have improved since August. But… it’s almost February. Some improvement was to be expected.
