The Scotland international gave an all-round contribution which was key to helping his side avoid defeat against the reigning champions, as he covered the most distance (12km) among his teammates, leading Corriere dello Sport to define him as ‘essential‘.
Whatever system Conte opts for, whether it is 4-2-2-2 or 4-3-3, McTominay is able to adapt and carry out different functions, both in the offensive and offensive end.

Against Simone Inzaghi’s side, the former Manchester United midfielder won possession back six times and mustered 16 ground and aerial duels combined, winning eight of them. He also proved an offensive reference for Napoli, collecting the most touches (3) in the opponents’ box and completing all his passes in the final third.
On top of all that, McTominay scored the Partenopei’s opener, which crucially allowed his side to follow the gameplan they had prepared, as they sat deep for long stretches in the second half and managed to frustrate Inter’s attempts to win the game.
