Premier League pundit Micah Richards has reacted to Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.
The Gunners returned to winning ways in the top flight at Molineux on Saturday, but Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off was the major talking point of the game.
The 18-year-old made a tactical foul on Matt Doherty in the closing stages of the opening half, but referee Michael Oliver surprisingly brandished a red card.
VAR Darren England did not intervene. This has led to huge criticism from several pundits, including Alan Shearer. Richards was equally shocked.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the former Manchester City star said: “Guys, that’s the worst decision I’ve ever seen in Premier League football history.
“And I stick by it. This happens week in, week out.
“How on earth can they go to VAR, go to the screen, look at it multiple times, multiple different angles, and they still think that’s a red card?
“I don’t like using the word ‘disgrace’, but if you look at the magnitude of that decision, it was so poor. For them to double down on the decision – I just think it’s shocking.”
Oliver has sent off eight Arsenal players over a stretch of 55 games. This includes a bizarre decision to book Gabriel Martinelli twice for two fouls in a sequence of 10 seconds at Wolves.
Leandro Trossard was also unlucky to be sent off at Manchester City this term. The Belgian was adjudged to have kicked the ball away after a foul, but he was trying to find a teammate.
Mateo Kovacic made a reckless challenge on Martin Odegaard last season and should have been sent off with a second yellow card. Oliver kept his cards in his pocket instead.
Oliver has made several controversial decisions in Arsenal games. It remains to be seen whether the club will write to the Premier League asking to block him from officiating their matches this term.
Arsenal are expected to appeal Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off. It would be a major surprise if the red card is not rescinded.
