Chelsea’s win over Tottenham on Thursday night was an overwhelmingly positive experience for most fans.

The Blues beat their big rivals, and picked up 3 massive points in the Champions League race in the process.

But it wasn’t all good – the team sheets which came out before the game revealed that Wesley Fofana wasn’t in the squad, which was very worrying considering his history of injury problems.

Romeo Lavia – who we had been told was closing in on a return, was only on the bench, having suffered a setback of his own. We didn’t get any information before the game, beyond the fact that Fofana was absent because of an injury. But in the embargoed post-match section which served as the pre-match presser for this Sunday’s game against Brentford, we got more information:

“We don’t know yet [how long they will be out]. We are waiting for the test results for both. Romeo is looking a better injury compared to Wes in terms of he can be back earlier than Wes,” Maresca said.

Pressed for more details on that pretty flimsy effort, the manager gave a little more information on Fofana’s issue:

“Nothing [happened], a muscle problem a few days ago and we are waiting for some more checks.”

Maresca plays down Fofana fears – but that doesn’t give much comfort

From his first answer, Fofana’s injury is worse than Lavia’s, and it sounds like it could be pretty bad. If you look back at what Maresca said about the defender’s issue picked up in December, he said it was “bad news,” but didn’t go into too many details.

It sounds worryingly like he’s playing this one down just as much. Still, if Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah play as well as they did on Thursday night, and Moises Caicedo plays as well as he did ahead of them, we can live without Fofana.
