Inter Milan face even more Serie A title pressure as they are the team with the highest wage bill in the Italian top flight.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the Nerazzurri’s total gross spending of €206 million per season puts them ahead of Juventus and AC Milan.
Over the summer, Inter finally overtook Juventus in the Serie A wage bill runnings.
That was a consequence of shifting strategies from the two clubs.
The Nerazzurri signed a couple of relatively high earners on free transfers in the form of Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi.
Then there were key contract extensions for Nicolo Barella and Lautaro Martinez. Over the last couple years Inter have locked down the core of their squad and increased their earnings.
Meanwhile, Juventus offloaded a number of their highest earners last summer. They spent big to reinforce the squad in terms of transfer fees, but on players with considerably lower wages.
Inter Milan will certainly be aiming to trim their wage bill over the next few years.
To some extent, that wage bill is the result of the team’s difficulties spending big on transfer fees. They’ve focused on free transfer signings, who have had higher wage demands.

Inter owners Oaktree Capital, on the other hand, want to invest in younger players. That will mean higher transfer fee outlays, but less spending on wages.
But in the present, Inter have a squad that out-earns any other in Serie A.
The Nerazzurri’s €206 million gross wage bill is ahead of Juventus’s €200 million.
Meanwhile, AC Milan spend €163 million gross on wages, and Roma are just behind with €160 million.
In the view of the Gazzetta, this further emphasizes the fact that Inter Milan are the team to beat in the Serie A title race. Or at least they should be.
