The New York Red Bulls have strengthened their defense with the addition of Alexander Hack, a former Bundesliga player, on a contract until 2026 with an option for 2027. At 31, Hack brings a solid career from European and Middle Eastern soccer to the club, filling in the gaps and bringing experience to a team that has great ambitions for the next season of MLS.

Experience that Hack has

Alexander Hack developed in the youth ranks of Germany and built his career at Mainz 05, for whom he has made 145 Bundesliga appearances with a record of 8 goals and 3 assists. But this signing is a little more than numbers. Having played under Sandro Schwarz at Mainz, the now head coach of the Red Bulls, it could facilitate Hack into adapting to the team's play style and the rigors of the MLS.

As Jochen Schneider, the club's head of sport said, "Alexander is a proven defender from his time in the Bundesliga. He will bring valuable experience to our squad and set a great example for our younger players."

A team looking for balance

The arrival of Hack also comes in a period when the Red Bulls are seeking a strategic rebuilding. Los Red Bulls traded defender Andrés Reyes to San Diego FC, and with Noah Eile, Sean Nealis, and Dylan Nealis the core in their defense, an experienced piece was needed in that backline. He will bring depth and a level of competitiveness to the squad.

Hack isn't coming alone this offseason, with the club also signing forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as a Designated Player. Together, they symbolize the commitment of the Red Bulls to building a complete and competitive team.

Hack's acquaintance with Sandro Schwarz will be an advantage, too. Schwarz is aware of the player's potential and how to fully utilize it on the field; thus, the risk while integrating him into the team will be minimal, which is important in a league where every point counts.

In Schwarz's own words, "Alexander is a great defender who will bring a lot of passion and quality to our club."

The vision of the club

Coming into 2025, the New York Red Bulls have high expectations after reaching the MLS Cup final in 2024-a first since 2008. While losing 2-1 to LA Galaxy, the team showed they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. Hack's arrival, along with other reinforcements, is a clear indication that the Red Bulls are gunning for honors.

With the MLS getting more competitive, a strong defense is what separates those fighting for the title from those who get eliminated early.
