Manchester City have been struck with a disastrous start to life working with Nico Gonzalez after the Spanish midfielder sustained an injury during his debut.

The 23-year-old only arrived on Monday after the Premier League champions worked intensely to finalise an agreement with FC Porto to bring the midfielder to the club, making it four new signings in a single month.

Following the arrival of Abdukodir Khusanov from RC Lens, Vitor Reis from Palmeiras, and Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, the signing of Gonzalez in a €60 million switch from Portugal took City’s spending over the €200 million barrier in the January market.

Pep Guardiola and those around the club view Gonzalez as the immediate short-term and longer-term solution to the injury sustained by Rodri during the earlier stages of this season, ruling the Spain international out for the majority of the campaign.

However, having been granted his first-team debut for Manchester City at the very first opportunity, Nico Gonzalez’s start ended in huge disappointment after he was replaced within the opening 25 minutes.

After giving the ball away in defensive midfield, ultimately leading to a sensational goal from Leyton Orient from distance credited as a Stefan Ortega Moreno own goal, replays showed Gonzalez had sustained a heavy blow to his ribs or hip in the challenge.

Having tried to run the problem off and taken on board medical assessment from Manchester City physios and doctors, the decision was ultimately taken to withdraw the former Barcelona midfielder from the action with Bernardo Silva coming on in his place.

For now, it remains to be seen how serious the problem is for Manchester City’s new signing, although Pep Guardiola is likely to provide an update after the match or in the coming days with plenty of media duties on the horizon.

City will be hoping that the issue is nothing too serious ahead of a crucial run of matches for the club across competitions, starting with the first-leg of a UEFA Champions League last-16 play-off tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
