Nico Schlotterbeck shared his joy after getting the opportunity to captain Borussia Dortmund from the start for the first time in a Bundesliga game.
With Emre Can suspended and Julian Brandt injured, Nico Schlotterbeck captained Borussia Dortmund for their crunch Bundesliga clash against Bayern Munich on Saturday evening. As he so often does, the centre-back set the tone for his side and delivered another commanding performance in defence.
Schlotterbeck also helped set up Jamie Gittens' goal with a well weighted pass into the path of the English winger.
And while Borussia Dortmund had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the end, the game marked another special milestone for Schlotterbeck who has gone from strength to strength since joining the club from Freiburg two years ago.
After the game, Schlotterbeck spoke to Sky Sport about getting to captain Borussia Dortmund. "It meant a lot to me. I was extremely nervous before the game. I'm now in my third year here. If someone had told me this two years ago when I came here, I would have said they were crazy. It's an unbelievable feeling, it's a reward for my performance in two and a half years at BVB. I have to thank the coach for having so much confidence in me."
Nico Schlotterbeck has been ever-present for Borussia Dortmund since joining the club in 2022. The 25 year old was a vital part of the team as BVB nearly won the Bundesliga title in 2023. He also played a crucial role in the club's run to the Champions League final last season.
Schlotterbeck has established himself as a real leader in the Borussia Dortmund dressing room and was named the team's third captain this past summer. And if he continues like this, there is every chance that he will become the BVB captain in the future.
