Football League World's Wigan Athletic fan pundit reacts as Luton Town land the Latics talisman
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Wigan Athletic ace Thelo Aasgaard has departed the League One club in favour of a move to Championship strugglers Luton Town.
As first reported by FLW on Tuesday morning, the Hatters were in advanced talks with the Latics over signing the Norway youth international, who has scored 12 goals in 31 appearances for Shaun Maloney's side this season, where he had already bettered last term's career-best of nine goals in 39 outings.
The transfer fee was later revealed to be in excess of £3m, while Tics boss Maloney recently hinted that there is a release clause in the 22-year-old's contract - the move is now complete and Wigan will once again be left reeling at the loss of a key player after Charlie Hughes departed for Hull in the summer window.
Following the news that Aasgaard was set to join the Hatters, FLW asked our Latics fan pundit, Corey Bissell, if it is a good move for the Wigan academy graduate, and if he thinks any of the money will be reinvested into a replacement.
Corey told Football League World: "I think £3m, if that's the right rumoured release clause is a decent price for Latics.
"I think, overall, maybe in a couple of years he could be worth more than that, but realistically, at a club in League One, £3m for a player is a solid price as well, it's going to allow us to reinvest.
"I think in terms of the move for Aasgaard, honestly I'm not a fan of it, I think he could easily go on and play for a higher Championship team, than one especially in the relegation zone, like Luton are at the minute.
"Obviously, that could change under Bloomfield, but I think he's better than that.
"There's potential that he could be playing us next year at this point, the way that Luton are going.
"So I think, for his sake, not necessarily that much of an upwards move in all honesty, but again, it remains to be seen whether Bloomfield can turn that around.
"When it comes to reinvesting in the squad, I think Maloney sort of said earlier in the window that (the) chances are, should players like our Thelo Aasgaard's leave, we do have succession plans, which I suppose is one thing that you can't particularly fault our ownership for.
"Charlie Hughes recently, obviously leaving (last summer).
"Will Aimson's been a revelation, James Carragher's stepped in quite well, so the succession planning from the board can be quite solid.
"It's been reiterated today that there will be a replacement for Thelo Aasgaard, there are targets that have been lined up, it's just, obviously, of course, we've got to go and do those deals with other clubs now."
As rightly acknowledged by Corey, it was reported on Tuesday that the Latics have already targeted an Aasgaard replacement ahead of transfer deadline day.
However, whoever that turns out to be has got very big shoes to fill, as the Norway youth international has been an outstanding attacking talent for a side who have otherwise struggled in attack, and have scored just 26 goals in as many League One fixtures.
Whether Mike Danson gives Maloney money to spend remains to be seen, but there has to be a direct replacement considering Aasgaard has been so influential on the pitch in the final third.
