Manchester City midfielder Matheus Nunes has confirmed a desire to return to Sporting CP in Portugal at some stage in his top-level professional playing career.
The Portugal international has endured a mixed period with the reigning Premier League champions since arriving in a big-money move from fellow top-flight side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer market of 2023.
Despite winning the English top-flight title in his first season as a Manchester City player, consistent minutes had been hard to come by in his favoured position of central midfield given the quality at the disposal of Pep Guardiola.
However, the ongoing campaign has seen somewhat of a resurgence for the 26-year-old, as Guardiola has found his unique qualities in carrying the ball over long distances useful in the right-back position in various games.
While there may have been joy for Matheus Nunes in terms of the improved opportunities, minutes, and goal contributions for Manchester City, results have kept that happiness to a minimum for both himself and the wider squad.
Speaking during a new interview with Mais Futebol, Nunes has admitted he ‘obviously’ wants to return to Sporting CP at some stage in his playing career and continues to feel the ‘affection’ from the Lisbon club’s supporters.
“Obviously I want to come back (to Sporting CP), and I’ve said that several times,” the Portugal international said recently, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness.
He continued, “I think they (the fans) know that. On top of that, after the Champions League game, the affection I felt… I had already returned to the stadium, but playing there had never happened.
“And the affection I felt… I was really pissed off because we lost, but I can’t explain the affection I felt.”
Nunes refused to put any timeframe on a potential return to his former club however, as he closed on the matter, “I’m not going to say dates, obviously, I’m not going to estimate that, but obviously I’m going to come back.”
With Manchester City expected to undergo a major overhaul and rebuild of their first-team squad during the summer months, it remains to be seen whether Matheus Nunes will be one of the players subject to being made available for sale.
A number of the Portugal international’s midfield teammates are likely to be subject to scrutiny among meetings from recruitment officials at the club, largely due to their age, and as such Nunes’ profile could be deemed as useful for the next phase of the club.
