Former Milan and Torino manager Marco Giampaolo has officially been appointed as the new head coach at Lecce following the dismissal of Luca Gotti over the weekend.

Lecce sacked their former head coach, Gotti, following the 1-1 draw against Empoli in Serie A on Friday. The Salentini currently sit in the relegation zone, in 18th place on nine points from their opening 12 matches of the 2024-25 campaign.

Gotti had been appointed in March of 2024 as a replacement for Roberto D’Aversa. Despite keeping the team up in 2023-24, the current campaign did not get off to the most encouraging of starts.

Lecce have confirmed in a statement on Monday morning that Giampaolo has been appointed on a short-term contract until the end of the 2024-25 season. The deal includes an automatic renewal should Lecce retain their Serie A status at the end of the campaign.

Giampaolo has been out of work since his spell with Sampdoria in 2022, eventually leaving while the Blucerchiati were in 20th place in the table.

Also on the 57-year-old’s CV are Torino and Milan, as well as Empoli, Cremonese, Brescia and Cagliari.
