Big relief for Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid as the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has handed the French megastar a minimal one-match suspension following his straight red card against Alaves.

Mbappe started against Alaves away in Vitoria but was sent off just 38 minutes into the match for a reckless high challenge on Antonio Blanco.

Given the nature of the tackle, the disciplinary body could have applied a sanction of one to three games under Article 130 of the competition regulations. However, the committee has opted for the lightest punishment possible.

The official ruling reads: “One match suspension for acting violently during the course of play or as a direct consequence of a challenge in the game.”

As a result, Mbappe will now only miss Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The referee’s account of the incident in his official match report was instrumental in the lenient outcome. The document stated:

“In the 38th minute, Kylian Mbappe was sent off for the following reason: entering with his foot in a studs-up manner at shin height of an opponent, while contesting the ball, using excessive force.”

By classifying the action as a genuine attempt to play the ball, the challenge was not interpreted as violent conduct or aggression, which would have warranted a harsher penalty.

As such, Mbappe will now escape with only a one-match suspension, meaning he will be ready and available to face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey later this month.
