AC Milan have announced that Matteo Gabbia has had his deal with the club renewed until 2029. News first broke of a possible renewal after his winner against Inter, so the club must be praised for the speed of negotiations.
When Gabbia returned from Villarreal in January, it seemed he would be a bit-part player, and originally, he was just that. However, he quickly became a mainstay in Stefano Pioli’s defence, and whilst he did not steal headlines, he became one of Milan’s few consistent players of the 2023/24 season.
In the summer he faced a similar threat, and with the addition of Strahinja Pavlovic, it seemed he was going to fall back to being a rotational option.
Once again though, this has not been the case. When he was given a chance, he took it again, just as he did last season. Despite Paulo Fonseca’s consistent defensive changes, Gabbia has been solid when called upon and a leader, something which the Diavolo have often lacked without his presence.
Following his late winner in the Derby della Madonnina, reports suggested the club were looking to reward him with a new deal, including a payrise, and potentially the armband one day. Today, in a statement on the Milan website, it was announced that his renewal has been signed until 2029.
“AC Milan is delighted to announce that Matteo Gabbia has renewed his contract until 30 June 2029.
“Born in 1999, Matteo has worn the Rossoneri shirt since he was 12 and his determination and contribution, both on and off the pitch, deeply align with Club values.
“After totalling 84 appearances and five goals, AC Milan and Matteo will continue to write their story together.”
Perhaps the armband will follow shortly, but with an extension until 2029, the Rossoneri have made a statement of intent to build towards the future with Gabbia.
