A few months ago, predicting Barcelona’s starting line-up was a straightforward task, as one name was guaranteed—Marc Casado.
The young midfielder was the standout performer in Hansi Flick’s system, becoming an essential figure in the centre of the pitch. His rise to prominence came at a crucial time when Barcelona were unable to bring in new signings.
So with limited options available, Flick placed his trust in Casado, and the youngster made the most of the opportunity, delivering high-level performances in the first half of the season.

Flick’s admiration for the midfielder was evident from the start. Casado brought physicality, stability, defensive discipline, and high-pressing intensity to the team.
On top of that, he contributed in attack, even providing an assist in the high-stakes clash against Real Madrid.
His consistent performances did not go unnoticed by the Spanish national team, with Luis de la Fuente rewarding him with a call-up to the senior squad.
At that point, everything seemed to be going in the right direction for the talented youngster.
Sadly, in recent weeks, Casado’s status in the team has significantly changed. Flick, who once heavily relied on him, appears to have shifted his preferences.

Frenkie de Jong, who had faced a dip in form earlier, has regained his rhythm and confidence, benefiting from the German manager’s support. The Dutchman’s performances have steadily improved, making him a key figure in Barcelona’s midfield.
Flick has always been a huge admirer of the Dutchman, and it is now evident that he values his ability to control the game and dictate the tempo. As a result, Casado’s involvement has been significantly reduced.
At the beginning of the season, Casado was practically untouchable in Flick’s plans, playing 15 consecutive full matches. Now, his role has diminished drastically.
Against Rayo Vallecano, he was substituted once again, marking the fourth time in the last five matches where he has received limited playing time.
In this period, he has only accumulated a total of 84 minutes on the pitch. His most notable absence came against Alaves, but even in the Rayo match, he was only brought on in stoppage time to help see out the game.

February has been a particularly challenging month for him, despite the fact that he played a crucial role in both Spanish Super Cup matches against Athletic Club and Real Madrid.
With the most decisive phase of the season approaching, where Barcelona will be competing for multiple trophies, Casado faces a tough challenge. He must work his way back into Flick’s plans and prove that he deserves more playing time.
While De Jong has secured his place in the team, Flick has shown in the past that he does not favour any player unconditionally. If he notices a dip in De Jong’s performance, he will not hesitate to make changes.
For Casado, the mission is clear—he must impress Flick once again and reclaim his spot in the team.
His earlier displays proved that he has the quality to make a difference and now, it is up to him to show the same determination and commitment that initially earned him Flick’s trust.
