Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson says he knew he would save Omar Marmoush’s penalty after he was handed the ball by Erling Haaland in the FA Cup final.
Oliver Glasner’s side won the first major trophy in the club’s history on Saturday as they narrowly defeated Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.
Eberechi Eze finished off a well worked counter-attack with a sublime strike in the first half, which turned out to be the only goal of the game.
City were handed a golden opportunity to equalise before the break when Tyrick Mitchell fouled Bernardo Silva in the box. Haaland looked prime to take the spot kick, but he passed it onto Marmoush, who saw his penalty saved by Henderson.
Daniel Munoz thought he had doubled Palace‘s lead in the 58th minute, but Ismaila Sarr was ruled offside in the buildup by the semi-automatic offside technology. The south London outfit held on for dear life through ten minutes of added time to become the 45th different club to lift the FA Cup.
“Incredible,” Henderson told BBC One after the final whistle. “We had a feeling it would be our day today. The manager had a game plan and we executed it. We deserve this so much.”
The 28-year-old said he didn’t know where Haaland would have placed his penalty had he taken it, but he knew exactly where Marmoush was going to shoot.
“To be fair, Haaland might have stepped up. He gave it to Marmoush and I knew which way he was going. I knew I would save it.”
Henderson was fortunate not to receive a red card in the first half, however. The former Manchester United goalkeeper slapped the ball away from Haaland outside the area, but the VAR deemed he was not denying a goal scoring opportunity.
“The ball carried into my box and I knew it was fine – who cares?”
The two-cap England international dedicated the win to his late father, who passed away last year. “I lost my dad at the start of the season, but he was with me today,” he said.
“He was with me every kick of the game. I dedicate that win to him.”
