FLW's Watford fan pundit has given his verdict on the ownership's best interests in the club
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Watford owners the Pozzo family, led by Gino, have been in charge of the club since the summer of 2012.
In that time, the Hornets have enjoyed a lot of highs in that period, including enjoying several seasons in the Premier League, as well as reaching the FA Cup final in 2019.
However, it has been reported that the Pozzo family are considering external investment, or even a potential takeover, of the Championship club.
Tom Cleverley’s side are currently fighting for a play-off place in the second division, having not competed in the top flight since 2022.
When asked whether the owners have the club’s best interests at heart, FLW’s Watford fan pundit Justin Beattie claimed they do not.
He acknowledged the high moments the Hornets have enjoyed during their ownership, but believes the relationship with supporters has now soured, and a sale would be the best step forward.
“I think the supporters’ relationship with Gino Pozzo, the owner of Watford, is at an all-time low,” Beattie told Football League World.
“I think patience is starting to wear thin a little bit now with his ownership now, although he is actively seeking investment or someone to take over the club.
“So, we’re aware that his time at Watford is over for himself as well, but the player recruitment has been shocking for the past few seasons.
“I think it probably is time for Gino to move on.
“Having said that, we have to remember all of the good times that his ownership has brought us as supporters, a sustained period in the top flight, an FA Cup final, the stadium now looks really nice.
“It was only three sides that were built when he turned up.
“Although we have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to Gino Pozzo’s ownership, the time does feel like it’s run out now.
“There are elements of fans that are vehement about him leaving, others are sort of okay with him staying on as long as he finds a buyer quickly.
“But, I think you’d be hard pushed to find a supporter that says he has the club’s best interests at heart.”
Watford finished 15th in the Championship last season, their lowest ever league finish under the Pozzo family ownership.
The time has come for change at Watford, as the relationship between the fans and the owners has hit a low point.
There’s no denying the positive work that’s been done under the Pozzo family, but there’s been a lack of energy around their ownership since their last relegation.
The carousel of managers has hurt that relationship, eroding trust and faith in their leadership.
Player recruitment has also been underwhelming, leading to a negative fan sentiment that will require a lot of changes to repair.
