‘Please never ever doubt the quality that Jack Grealish has!’ – Pep Guardiola backs his struggling star | OneFootball

Pep Guardiola has come out in support of Jack Grealish during another stop-start season for the £100 million pound man.

It is now Grealish’s fourth season with Manchester City but he has not always shined since leaving Aston Villa. The Englishman struggled to adjust during his first season with the Champions although he excelled in his second campaign at the Etihad and was a key piece in City’s treble-winning side.

However, Grealish has been unable to replicate his fine form since the treble season. Last season was hampered by injuries for the attacker and he has been unable to eradicate those issues this year.

The winger could be one of the players that is moved on during an overhaul of the squad this summer but despite this, the England international remains in the plans of City’s boss.

Asked if Grealish has been demoted to cup duties, Guardiola explained “Jack played at Leyton Orient and played really good. And after played against Real Madrid. Real Madrid is not a friendly game, right?

“After 20 minutes he was out injured. So that is what has happened this season.

“Now when you see Jeremy (Doku) or Savinho in that position, it is obvious that they have to play.

“The reason why he didn’t play much is because he was not able to, because he had niggles or problems. Like tomorrow, I don’t know if he will be ready.

“You know, to play in a game you have to be there.”

In strong defence of his player, Guardiola continued: “So this is the question, no question mark about his quality. Please never, never, ever doubt the quality that Jack has.”

Despite the faith displayed from his manager, Grealish has started just six of City’s 27 Premier League games so far this season.

This is far fewer than the other players that operate in wide areas for the Blues. Phil Foden and summer arrival Savinho have both started 17 times, whilst Jeremy Doku has 11 starts. Even January signing Omar Marmoush has already started on five occasions.

“He has not been here because of problems,” Guardiola continued. “He has not played three games in a row.

“He played a game against Nottingham and played good and after in the training session he was injured again.

“So it is not big issues but he cannot make a big effort and sprint again and again and again.

“This is the only question mark, there is not another one.”

Asked about Grealish’s availability for City’s FA Cup tie with Plymouth Argyle this weekend, Guardiola answered, “We will see today. I do not know yet.”
