Argyle have endured a tough season in the Championship so far, with relegation looking likely as they sit bottom of the league, three points from safety, with just two games left to seal a surprise survival.

They are bound to be after defensive reinforcements this summer, regardless of which league they are preparing for, and Dons full-back MacKenzie is believed to be on their radar as he nears the end of his current deal with the Scottish Premiership side.

Mackenzie joined Aberdeen as a youngster, and progressed through their youth ranks to make his first-team debut for the club in March 2021, following a loan spell with lower-league side Forfar Athletic.

He has been a regular in their squad over the last few seasons, and has made the left-back position his own at Pittodrie under Jimmy Thelin, with four assists and one goal in 34 appearances in all competitions so far this term.

The 25-year-old last signed a new deal at his boyhood club in late 2021, and is quickly nearing the end of his contract with an extension seemingly looking unlikely as it stands.

According to the Daily Record, Plymouth have been alerted to his potential availability this summer, but a move is in the balance due to their precarious league position.

MacKenzie has been a regular in the Scottish top-flight for a good few years now, while he was also called up to the Scotland national team in October. As a result, it remains to be seen whether he would be happy to move south of the border to join a club in League One.

Jack MacKenzie has previously been linked with a move to the Championship

MacKenzie is clearly set to be on his way out of Aberdeen this summer as he chases a new challenge in his career, but the Greens may well not be the only club interested in making him theirs in the months to come, following previous reports of interest from Championship teams.

The 24-year-old's impressive performances have seemingly caught the eye of English clubs ahead of his contract being set to expire, with transfer journalist Alan Nixon reporting back in October that Sheffield United, Stoke City and Preston North End were all taking an interest in his services.

He was also claimed to have emerged on Sheffield Wednesday's radar in the midst of the January transfer window, but no Championship side made a move for his services that month, with a move now seemingly set to happen as soon as his Dons contract runs out in June.

Argyle would no doubt love to bring in a player of MacKenzie's pedigree and quality this summer, but it does look as if any potential free transfer will depend on which league they are in for 2025/26.
