Despite a 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool on Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain’s confidence of progressing in the UEFA Champions League has not been dented. Quite the opposite, according to L’Équipe.
PSG dominated the first leg, registering 27 shots in the game. If not for Alisson, who made nine saves on the night and had, in his own words, the best game of his life, Les Parisiens would almost certainly have been heading to Anfield with a lead to protect. However, it is Liverpool who have the advantage as Harvey Elliott netted a late winner in what former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher described as “one of the biggest robberies in football”.
But PSG, buoyed by their dominance in the first leg, head to Merseyside full of confidence. “Despite the defeat, they are more confident (about qualifying) now than they were before the match,” a club source told L’Équipe. PSG’s squad were reportedly “surprised” by Liverpool’s level.
Gianluigi Donnarumma was at fault for Elliott’s late winner, however, he was consoled by his teammates post match, who told him, “Don’t worry, we’ll go through”. Confidence aplenty at Le Campus but time will tell if that manifests in a result at Anfield.
