Niko Kovac (to DAZN): "We had two very quick strikers today who attacked the space in behind and covered a lot of ground up front. One set up the other and Maxi scored two goals. It couldn't have gone better, but we still have some work to do. I'm very happy with the result. It's not normal for a centre-back to take the corners and free-kicks, but you could see why we chose him today. Not just today, but in the future too. Schlotti has a really great left foot. We won today, but we still have some work to do and there are still seven games remaining."

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): "The goalscorer always stands out in the end, of course. I'm personally happy that Maxi Beier scored two goals because he works a lot. Together with Karim Adeyemi, he covered an unbelievable distance up front. Nico Schlotterbeck took corners for the first time in his life – very successfully. We practised it and are happy that we were able to steer the game in our favour via set-pieces. Freiburg await us next week and then it goes on. We don't want to let up, and the three points help."

Nico Schlotterbeck (to DAZN): "We didn't get into the game so easily in the first half, but we also gave away almost nothing. And then we were fully alert on two occasions before the break. You have to try and pose Mainz challenges. We did that and we're very happy about that."

Waldemar Anton (in the mixed zone): "It worked out very well today. We hardly gave anything away apart from the goal. That speaks volumes. That's why everyone felt very comfortable today. We defended on the front foot and pressed man-to-man. You can decide games with set-pieces. That worked very, very well today. I think we'll continue to practise that over the next few weeks. The three points were hugely important. We're still not where we want to be, however. We have to put our foot on the gas in every game. We did that for 90 minutes today. The basics are the be-all and end-all; everything else will then happen by itself."

Maximilian Beier (to DAZN): "We trained hard all week and left everything out on the pitch today. The two goals make for a nice feeling. We won and felt very good."

Karim Adeyemi (in the mixed zone): "That was a very good first step after the international break. The three points will do us good. Let's see what is still possible this season. We cannot be entirely satisfied: we conceded a goal, and we can definitely do even more in footballing terms. The season has not gone well for us, and for me it's simply a case of keeping our feet on the gas.“Transcribed by Boris Rupert
