Rodrygo’s role at Real Madrid could soon change, as reports suggest that Carlo Ancelotti could consider him for the attacking midfield position.

According to a recent update from Guillermo Rai in The Athletic, the Brazilian player, who had been sidelined due to injury, returned to training with the ball this week and has not been ruled out for the upcoming Liverpool match.

However, while Rodrygo is still a possibility for the game, his chances are less certain compared to Lucas Vazquez.

Much-needed shift?

Earlier this month, the club announced that Rodrygo would be out for five to six weeks, but this timeline was likely given with caution. It is believed that the actual recovery time will be much shorter, and he could return to action sooner than expected.

The coaching staff at Real Madrid still value him as a crucial player, particularly for his ability to contribute both defensively and in attack. His versatility makes him an asset to the team, offering balance and depth to the squad.

Despite this, Rodrygo has found it difficult to secure consistent playing time this season. With the attacking dup of Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr., there is limited space for him in the starting lineup.

The addition of Mbappe, especially with his struggles in the centre-forward position, has forced Ancelotti to adopt a more flexible tactical approach. This has unfortunately pushed Rodrygo further down the pecking order, leaving him with fewer opportunities.

In a system where the team typically plays with two forwards, the only way to get Rodrygo into the lineup may be by moving him to an attacking midfield role.

This is a position that Jude Bellingham occupied last season and one that could allow Rodrygo to contribute creatively while still playing a vital role in the team’s overall structure.

As Real Madrid continue to evolve, this potential tactical shift could be just what the Brazilian needs to reclaim his place on the pitch.
