As has already been reported, Real Madrid had an approach for Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold rejected recently.

The right-back is set to be out of contract at the end of the season and everything suggests that he could leave as a free agent and sign for Los Blancos in the summer.

Indeed, the Spanish champions are confident about their chances of securing Alexander-Arnold’s services for free before next season.

However, given the lack of options at right-back in the squad currently following Dani Carvajal’s season-ending injury, Real Madrid are looking to bring forward the England star’s arrival this month itself.

Another approach not ruled out

As mentioned earlier, Liverpool have already knocked back an approach from Real Madrid to sign Alexander-Arnold in the ongoing transfer window.

However, according to The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana, it is not ruled out that Los Blancos make another attempt to sign their primary right-back target in January.

Those within the club are apprehensive of the team’s chances of being competitive in all tournaments without reinforcements in the right-back slot where Carlo Ancelotti is counting on Lucas Vazquez and youngster Lorenzo Aguado.

Fede Valverde and Raul Asencio are seen as makeshift options but neither inspire great confidence. Sources within the club told The Athletic:

“What I know is that without a right-back, it is impossible to win the Champions League.”

As such, there remains a possibility that Real Madrid will try and launch another move to sign Alexander-Arnold this month only, although convincing Liverpool will be a difficult task, especially with the Reds leading the Premier League title race.

There is still a lot of time left in the January window and it will be interesting to see if Florentino Perez & co. do make a fresh attempt to get their for a fee right now rather than waiting until the summer.
