Not every single target that Barcelona pursues ends up joining the club. Despite the massive appeal of the Catalan club and many top talents wanting to join the side, other factors can often disrupt various operations. For Barcelona specifically, one of the biggest issues in recent seasons have been their finances.
Despite having the means to pursue big operations, the restrictions imposed on the club make it almost impossible to bring in world class players in every transfer window. However, this has also become a blessing in disguise for the club at various points.
Over the course of the previous few transfer windows, one of the players that Barcelona was quite heavily linked to was 29-year-old Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich. However, Barcelona ultimately ended up relying on their own youth talents to cover up the void of a defensive midfielder in the team.
The likes of Marc Casado and Marc Bernal stepped up, and La Blaugrana have not looked back ever since. However, Kimmich still has not renewed his contract with Bayern Munich and his current deal expires in the summer. Taking advantage of this, Real Madrid have now stepped in it seems.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Los Blancos have now made an initial contact with the player’s camp. Moreover, Kimmich himself would reportedly be open to joining Real Madrid should his contract at Bayern Munich expire in the summer.
Since the departure of Toni Kroos, Real Madrid have been in search of a player in their midfield who can dictate the tempo of the game. While there are definitely differences between Kimmich and Kroos, he offers a closer alternative to the former Real Madrid player than the other options currently at their disposal.
As for Barcelona and the €50 million-rated German midfielder, the links between the two continue to live on but it does not make too much sense from a sporting perspective. After all, the young talents of the Catalan club have proven time and time again already this season that they are worth putting faith in.
