Real Madrid are facing Villarreal in La Liga this evening at 18:30 (CET) after a gruelling battle against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night in the UEFA Champions League.
The match between the two Spanish capital clubs went to extra time and penalty shootouts, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men ultimately prevailing to advance into the quarter-finals.
Now, they are having to face a tricky game against Villarreal in La Liga in less than 72 hours, with a number of players in the squad dealing with niggles and fatigue.
As such, Mundo Deportivo reports that Real Madrid are outraged with La Liga over the scheduling of the Villarreal encounter.
The frustration is not new – the Merengues had expressed their discontent as soon as the Saturday evening kick-off was confirmed.
Having faced Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Real Madrid believe they should have played on Sunday instead, like the Rojiblancos and Barcelona, their direct title rivals.

The club’s anger has peaked upon realising that less than 72 hours will have passed between the end of the Atletico match and today’s game against Villarreal.
As such, Real Madrid are planning to take action with regard to this concerning situation. After all, FIFA recommends a minimum of 72 hours of rest between matches, but La Liga only requires 48.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had already expressed his frustration about this bizarre situation and now the club also seem to have taken a firm stance.
The club’s official channel, Real Madrid TV, announced ahead of the Villarreal game: “Real Madrid will never again allow this outrage by La Liga and Tebas against the health of footballers and if it happens again they will ask FIFA for protection.”
The club will approach FIFA because it is clear that “Madrid will never again play a match without 72 hours rest,” said Real Madrid TV and added that “La Liga influences the championship through the schedules.”
