As reported earlier today, strengthening the defensive unit has become a top priority for Real Madrid heading into the summer transfer window.

The Merengues are already set to welcome Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer to reinforce the right-back position once his contract at Liverpool expires.

On top of that, the idea is to sign a new centre-back as well as a left-back as Xabi Alonso prepares to take charge of the team.

Dean Huijsen of AFC Bournemouth has been identified as the main target for the central defensive department and Real Madrid are ready to act.

Real Madrid to make a strong push for Huijsen

Indeed, according to AS journalist Edu Burgos, Real Madrid are now making a strong push to sign Huijsen from Bournemouth.

The reigning Spanish champions are set to hold a fresh round of talks with the 20-year-old defender’s entourage next week once Sunday’s crucial El Clasico against Barcelona is out of the way.

Huijsen has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Bournemouth after making the switch from Juventus last summer and is one of the most sought-after defenders in the market.

The report states that Premier League champions Liverpool and their rivals Chelsea are also keen on signing the Dutch-born Spanish defender.

However, Huijsen’s priority is to sign for Real Madrid which gives the club a big advantage, although they maintain that there will be no crazy moves made int he market.

The young centre-back has a release clause worth €58 million in his contract at Bournemouth.

Initially, there appeared to be reluctance on Real Madrid’s part to meet that valuation, but it appears that they might be warming up to the idea especially given that there are other clubs gunning for his signing who would be more than happy to activate the clause.

Huijsen’s interest in joining Real Madrid will hold the key though with reports in Spain going as far as stating that the 20-year-old has even authorised a law firm to negotiate with Los Blancos on his behalf.

With fresh contacts set to take place next week, Real Madrid may gain significant advantage over the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in the race for Huijsen.
