With the summer transfer window only a few months away, plans are taking shape at Real Madrid to strengthen their squad for the next season.
By this point, it is well-established that Los Blancos intend to reinforce the right-back position and want to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract at Liverpool expires at the end of the season.
There is confidence within the club about landing the England international, and considering that he would be joining on a free transfer, there should be funds available to bolster other areas as well.
Now, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, Real Madrid are considering making a big investment in the summer for a centre-back, knowing that Alexander-Arnold will not cost anything in transfer fees.
And, Arsenal mainstay William Saliba remains the preferred target for Los Blancos, with the French international greatly admired at the Spanish capital club.
Regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe currently, the 23-year-old has been on Real Madrid’s radar for some time now.
Initially, it was suggested that the Merengues will move for Saliba in 2026, when he will have just one year left on his contract at Arsenal.

However, now, Moretto suggests that Real Madrid are planning to make concrete efforts to sign the French international this year itself.
However, any deal for Saliba will not be easy to pull off, considering that he is one of Arsenal’s most important players and the Gunners intend to do everything possible to keep hold of him and stave off Real Madrid’s interest.
There has been talk of a potential contract renewal in the past but the defender stated recently that he is in no hurry to sign a new deal, although he insisted that he is very happy at Arsenal.
“Not yet… because I have some years left on my contract. There is no rush at the minute,” said Saliba about talks over a new deal.
“I am really happy here at Arsenal. I have two and a half years on my contract and I want to continue here,” he added.
“I want to win big things with Arsenal. If you leave this club and you don’t win anything then the fans will forget about you. I want to win here.”
So, despite Real Madrid’s strong interest, a move for Saliba will be hard to push through in the summer.
