Ben Doak has become an integral part of Scotland’s setup, delivering moments of brilliance that underline his potential. In the dramatic encounter against Croatia at Hampden Park, Doak’s dynamic performance stood out. His relentless energy and creativity caused constant problems for the Croatian defence, including an influential role in Scotland’s late winner.
Clarke reflected on Doak’s impact, stating, “He’s come into the team, he’s shown a really positive attitude, [and] he brings us something a little bit different to what we’ve had before, so, really pleased with Ben.”
The youngster’s assist for John McGinn’s late goal exemplified his growing importance. Doak’s surging run set up McGinn perfectly, showcasing his ability to create decisive moments. Clarke noted, “He gets the assist for the goal with the run, could maybe have had a couple more, could maybe have scored one himself.”

While Clarke is thrilled with Doak’s progress, he emphasised the importance of managing the young winger carefully to ensure his long-term development. “That’s a contribution from a young player that we need to protect and look after, but realise that he is good for now and hopefully for a long time in the future,” Clarke remarked.
Doak’s inclusion in the starting XI over seasoned talisman John McGinn raised eyebrows, but Clarke defended the decision, explaining it was the right move based on recent performances. “After what Ben’s done in the last few games, I felt it wasn’t the time to take him out of the firing line,” he said. Clarke highlighted Doak’s and Ryan Christie’s contributions in previous matches, particularly against Croatia, as justification for their selection.
Although McGinn began the match on the bench, his late heroics proved crucial. Entering the fray in the second half, McGinn displayed his trademark knack for delivering under pressure. With just under five minutes of regular time remaining, the Aston Villa midfielder slotted home the winning goal, sending the Hampden crowd into raptures.
Clarke praised McGinn’s impact, saying, “I also felt I was strengthening the bench a bit with John to come in, and he does what he does, coming off the bench and scoring the winner.”
The match against Croatia also highlighted Doak’s ability to compete against top-level defenders. Tasked with challenging the highly-rated Josko Gvardiol, Doak held his own in a captivating duel. The 17-year-old’s fearlessness and creativity posed problems for the experienced Croatian, reinforcing his credentials as a player for the present and the future.
As Scotland celebrates a vital victory, the rise of Ben Doak offers hope for sustained success. His partnership with established stars like McGinn will be pivotal as the national team aims to build on this result and achieve greater heights.
