Manchester United Eye Théo Hernández in Major Defensive Overhaul

Manchester United’s defensive rebuild under Rúben Amorim is gathering pace, with reports emerging that they have set their sights on AC Milan’s Théo Hernández. According to Fichajes, the Red Devils have already initiated contact to explore the terms of a potential deal.

Interest Intensifies as Milan Weighs Up Sale

Hernández, once an untouchable figure at Milan, now finds himself at a crossroads. Fichajes reports that the club’s directors have grown uncertain about his long-term role due to “his lack of consistency in play.” While his attacking prowess remains an asset, concerns over his defensive stability and fluctuating form have prompted Milan to consider cashing in.

His contract runs until 2026, but with tensions rising between the player and fans, a summer departure appears increasingly likely. “Despite his attacking talent and speed, his lack of consistency in play has led the club’s directors to consider his departure,” states the report.

United’s Left-Flank Dilemma

Manchester United’s struggles at left-back have been well-documented. Luke Shaw has battled fitness issues, while Tyrell Malacia remains sidelined long-term. Diogo Dalot has deputised admirably, but he is naturally a right-back, making Hernández an ideal acquisition. They have also signed Dorgu in the January transfer window however having Hernández & Dorgu would be an ideal situation.

United’s project under Amorim is built around aggressive full-backs who contribute both defensively and offensively. Hernández’s ability to break forward at pace aligns with this vision, making him a serious candidate for the role. “The Red Devils have been closely following his situation and could be the ideal destination for the player to begin a new stage in his career,” the article continues.

Transfer Fee and Potential Obstacles

Milan will not part with Hernández cheaply. Given his contract situation and pedigree, a fee north of €50 million is expected. United, while keen, must also consider Financial Fair Play constraints and their summer transfer priorities.

Additionally, competition could emerge. European heavyweights needing an elite left-back may yet enter the fray, potentially complicating United’s plans. That said, should an official bid arrive in the coming weeks, Milan’s willingness to negotiate suggests a deal could be struck sooner rather than later.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, Hernández represents both an exciting and risky prospect. His attacking credentials are undisputed, but doubts remain over his defensive discipline. Is he the long-term solution, or merely another high-profile gamble?

With Amorim implementing a high-energy, possession-based system, Hernández’s marauding style could be a perfect fit. However, United supporters have seen big-money defensive signings struggle before – names like Alex Telles and Aaron Wan-Bissaka come to mind.

His price tag is another concern. With United also needing reinforcements in midfield and up front, can they justify splashing €50 million or more on a left-back? If they do, fans will expect immediate results.
