There could be a late twist in AC Milan’s January window, as reports are claiming that a central midfielder may yet arrive after all.

As Calciomercato.com report, after the arrival of Kyle Walker, the directors are going all-in on Santiago Gimenez to try and convince Feyenoord to sell. While those headlines have been circulating, there has been little mentioned about a new midfield signing.

In the meantime, Youssouf Fofana and Tijjani Reijnders are working overtime. Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been the deputies on paper, but the former has been used just as much on the right and the latter is injured.

Ismael Bennacer has just returned after a long-term injury and thus must be allowed to get back to his best more gradually, all of which has led the management to think about the addition of a new central midfielder.

The report cites La Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim that the Rossoneri are thinking about an additional midfielder who can however be named in the UEFA squad list without having to exclude anyone else. In short, they need profiles who came through the academy in Italy.

The identikit is as follows: it must be a midfielder that is ready immediately, can arrive at a reasonable price and is able to play in front of the defence or as a mezzala. Calciomercato.com add that ‘all leads lead to Samuele Ricci’, the number one target but extremely complicated to snatch from Torino.

Ricci recently extended his contract until June 2028 but there is a gentleman’s agreement with Torino president Urbano Cairo: should offers of €20-25m or more arrive, the midfielder would be free to leave.

For now, Milan have other priorities and would perhaps like to find a solution at a lower cost, so other names might emerge. In the summer, however, discussions could be different and reactivated with Torino.
