Ruben Amorim is willing to bring back midfielder Angel Gomes to Manchester United, as per reports.

The Englishman made his debut for United in 2017 as a 16-year-old. At the time, he was considered one of the most promising prospects to graduate from the club’s famed academy.

However, doubts over his physicality and role in the first team eventually led to United deciding against handing him a contract extension and Gomes found himself without a club in the summer of 2020 before agreeing to sign for Lille.

At Lille, he found breakthrough under Paulo Fonseca, impressing fans and pundits alike with his ability to retain possession and progress the side’s play from deep. His exploits as a deep-lying playmaker also led to England call-up.

In recent months, the 24-year-old has made several appearances for the Three Lions, and has also found himself on the radar of multiple Premier League clubs.

Earlier this season, United were credited with an interest in Gomes, and now it is being suggested that Amorim is on board with the idea.

According to CaughtOffside, Amorim has given United “the green light” to attempt to re-sign Gomes, having been left convinced with his performances in France.

In his first game as the Red Devils boss, Amorim relied on a double pivot of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Still, it is fair to assume he would like to add more young and energetic options to his midfield ranks moving forward.

United face competition from a host of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, for his signature.

However, the England international would favour returning to Old Trafford and is believed to be looking for a three-year contract plus the option of a further year on top of that.

Gomes has entered the final months of his contract at Lille and will become a free agent at the end of the season.

The situation could allow his former club to sign him for a bargain fee in January or secure his signature for nothing in the summer of 2025.
