Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has advised midfielder Christian Eriksen to consider a move to Ajax after falling out of favour under manager Ruben Amorim.

The Denmark international was a key player for the Red Devils at the beginning of the campaign when Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount were sidelined with injuries.

However, his playing time has reduced since Amorim replaced Erik ten Hag as the manager. The 32-year-old has made just two league starts since the last international break.

His limited mobility does not suit the manager’s playing style. Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, Schmeichel said that returning to the Eredivisie would be a good option for Eriksen.

He said: “That [move to Ajax] would be a great step for him. Of course, as we know, he is a midfielder. In the Premier League, you need players who can sprint up and down for 90 minutes.

“The way Ruben Amorim wants to play also doesn’t suit him, he wants to win the ball back quickly. At a very high pace. That’s not in his nature. Unfortunately, Eriksen no longer has that energy.

“He’s a great player. Some of the things he does on the field. He’s still so good on the ball and technically. I think Ajax would be a fantastic move for him.”

Eriksen set to leave United on a free transfer

The Dane has registered four goals and four assists in 21 appearances for United this campaign.

Despite his goal contributions, he has been overlooked by Amorim. The midfielder does not have the pace and mobility to adapt to the manager’s tactical demands.

Eriksen still has the chance to leave United with the Turkish transfer window open until Tuesday night, but he could prefer a Bosman move when the season concludes.

His current deal expires at the end of June. Ajax could explore a reunion with the midfielder, having missed out on the opportunity to sign him last summer.

Eriksen, described as ‘world-class‘ by Brentford manager Thomas Frank, could also be tempted to return to Amsterdam where he started his professional career.
