The Owls boss spoke candidly to the press as Wednesday’s season ended at Vicarage Road

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has signed off the 2024/25 season with a thankful, but notably ambigious, message to the club's supporters.

The 36-year-old was evasive when directly asked about his future at Hillsborough, a sore talking point among Wednesday fans following his recent links to Southampton, Leicester City, and RB Leipzig.

The Owls concluded their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Watford to finish in 12th position in the Championship table, which is progress from their relegation battle the season prior, but it may not be enough to keep Rohl at Hillsborough.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield in post-match press duties, Rohl was introspective and emotional when talking about what's next for him.

“I think after the game today, when I went to the fans, I got a view of my last 560 days in this club.” the German said.

“To look in these faces, how they celebrate, how they call my name, it’s always special. Big, big respect to them - they are the heartbeat of this club are the fans, they are always there, they always supporting us.

“I had no experience that was negative, always positive, always togetherness, and they played a big, big part for our achievements so far.

“We don’t know what happens in the next couple of days. I know what I want to do, my picture’s very clear but it’s also part of the position of the club then.

“I will not forget this place. It doesn’t matter what happens now. To have, so quick, such a relationship, such a belief, such a hope, such a respectful togetherness, I can’t expect this when I took over. And it’s incredible, it will be part of the bottom of my heart.”

As for what comes next for the popular coach, Rohl kept things open - but made no secret of his ambition.

“It’s about the picture that I have, I hope we have a good, respectful last conversation. And then we have to carry on in both directions. It's important, and it’s what I think everybody deserved," Rohl added.

“I will be always thankful to the chairman that he gave me this big, big opportunity - I know this, that he was really brave and I think nobody should forget this.

"He was the guy who gave me this opportunity, and he was the guy who helped me a lot but sometimes we come a point where we have to move on.

“I want to work at the highest level, I want to make the next step, I think this is also where I make my position.

“Maybe it’s destiny. I enjoyed to work for this club, I enjoyed with my players - we should be very proud of what we achieved.

"One thing is also clear - I got a lot of credit, I got a lot of good words, but without my team, without my players it’s not possible to do everything and this is a big big thing for us as well. They help me, they help the club.”

Sheffield Wednesday would be losing their biggest asset if Danny Rohl departs in near future

There was symmetry in the setting - Danny Rohl’s first game in charge of Sheffield Wednesday came at Vicarage Road, where he inherited a side bottom of the table and in disarray.

18 months on, the same ground may have witnessed his final act in the role - now with the club finishing mid-table, restored in part of it’s status, if not yet in spirit.

Rohl’s post-match reflections were not the remarks of a man eager to depart, but they did carry the tone of someone who has already made peace with whatever comes next.

His words were generous, considered, and emotionally open: tributes to the fans, gratitude to controversial Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri, and a quiet insistence that what’s been built cannot be undone.
