With Danny Rohl widely expected to depart the club this summer, Sheffield Wednesday could soon be on the hunt for a new manager.

Despite taking over with the club looking doomed to relegation, Rohl somehow managed to keep Wednesday in the Championship last season before guiding them to a 12th-placed finish this term, but his time at Hillsborough looks set to come to an end.

Rohl only signed a new three-year contract with the Owls last summer, but the German's relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri began to break down in December after he was linked with a move to Southampton, resulting in a bitter public dispute during the January transfer window.

As they prepare for life back in the Championship, the Saints are still believed to be keen to bring Rohl to St Mary's, while Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Crystal Palace and Fulham have also been credited with an interest in the 36-year-old, who is said to have decided to walk away from Wednesday this summer.

It was claimed in March that Chansiri was lining up assistant Henrik Pedersen to take over from Rohl in the summer, but with his departure now looking like a near certainty, it remains to be seen whether the Owls chief will consider external candidates.

When asked who he would like to see replace Rohl at Hillsborough, FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna warned Chansiri against appointing Pedersen, and he urged him to look at younger options who are proven in the Championship, such as Queens Park Rangers head coach Marti Cifuentes and Plymouth Argyle manager Miron Muslic.

Cifuentes is expected to leave QPR this summer after being placed on gardening leave last month, while many have tipped Muslic to attract interest over the coming weeks, despite being unable to keep the Pilgrims in the division, and Patrick believes both managers should be on the Owls' radar.

"You'd like to be looking at the likes of Miron Muslic from Plymouth or Marti Cifuentes from QPR, young managers in a similar vein to Danny Rohl, who have done good jobs in difficult situations," Patrick said.

"But those guys, like Danny Rohl, have stood up to bad ownership, so they're not going to want to go from that to working under Chansiri.

"His antics have now become more public and well-known, so I just don't think the idea of us being a historically big club will wash, they will not want to come to another chaotic job.

"I couldn't see anyone like Tom Cleverley or Michael Carrick wanting to come to Wednesday either, they would want to work in a stable situation.

"I have heard that Henrik Pedersen is going to be taking over from Danny Rohl, and he would be a cheap, in-house appointment.

"That's really what it's going to be, and that always comes with a huge amount of risk.

"Someone doing well as a coach doesn't always mean they're a good manager.

"Pedersen's managerial record pre-Wednesday doesn't exactly fill you with a lot of optimism, so we're going to have to see how that goes.

"As I said, because of where the club is, realistic appointments don't really match up with what I would like.

"I think it's going to be Pedersen, and hopefully he will bring some continuity and can step up to the role.

"Ideally, I'd want us to be looking at a young manager like Cifuentes or Muslic, but that's just not going to happen."

As Patrick says, the turbulent nature of Chansiri's ownership at Hillsborough could deter prospective managers from taking the Wednesday job, but that does not mean that the club should not be ambitious in their search for a replacement for Rohl.

As the Premier League and Bundesliga seasons do not come to an end until late May, there is a chance that Rohl's future may not be resolved for at least a few more weeks, and that gives Chansiri time to look around and assess his options, rather than simply rushing into handing Pedersen the job, which would be a big risk given his poor managerial record.

While Cifuentes and Muslic may be in demand this summer, the fact that they both managed teams in the lower reaches of the Championship this season may rule them out of the thoughts of clubs with promotion aspirations, and that could potentially open the door for a mid-table outfit like the Owls to swoop.
