Southampton forward Mateus Fernandes voices his opinion about the club's gloomy attack.
It comes as no surprise that Southampton have the worst attacking unit in the Premier League. The Saints have scored only 16 goals and nearly half of them have been contributed by the offensive players.
Much intriguing is the fact that Southampton have a massive squad depth in their attacking ranks. Still, neither boss Ivan Juric nor the club knows where their next goals are coming from.
This issue often gets ignored due to regular defensive mistakes. However, enough is enough and the Saints must uncover a way to find the back of the net more often.
Addressing this worry, Southampton's young midfielder Mateus Fernandes has provided a solution.
In his own words, Fernandes was quoted by the Daily Echo: "We can't make mistakes in the Premier League because they are good players too. So we need to train more, improve more. Train our finishing and crossing."
Honestly, the Portuguese U21 midfielder must be praised for his maturity and understanding of the game.
In fact, this was Southampton's attack in a nutshell against Newcastle United. Except for James Bree's cross on Bednarek's goal, the Saints barely made any good passes in the opposition half.
Initially, Walker-Peters and Ryan Manning attempted some good through balls. Still, Newcastle's two goals within a few minutes restricted the fullbacks to help out the defence.
After that, the Toons didn't allow any Southampton player to test Nick Pope.
Hence, Fernandes has called for the team to strengthen its routine attacking phase. Southampton also has many physical players like Jan Bednarek, Paul Onuachu, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, which implies that heading is their biggest strength.
Thus, manager Ivan Juric needs to put greater emphasis on crosses and set pieces as part of the game plan. Doing so could increase the likelihood of Southampton netting multiple goals in every game.
Let's see how much of this assessment is translated into the Premier League.
