Manchester City have “too much quality” in their squad to continue their poor run of form deeper into the season, according to Stefan Ortega.

The Premier League champions updated their torrid run of form to nine defeats in their last 12 matches across competitions at the weekend as they fell to a 2-1 away defeat to Aston Villa in the Midlands on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers either side of the half-time interval put the result beyond any doubt, making Phil Foden’s injury time strike largely irrelevant to the overall outcome of the points in the match.

That run of form has meant Manchester City have now dropped to seventh position in the Premier League table, and 22nd in the UEFA Champions League with their last-16 hopes in serious doubt heading into the final two matchdays in the league phase.

But speaking to the club’s official website in recent days, Manchester City’s back-up goalkeeper Stefan Ortega Moreno claims onlookers can “see all the quality on the pitch” among other factors to suggest that the team’s losing run of form will end sooner rather than later.

“We are all humans. I think it is just normal there is a point where you struggle a little bit and with all the injured players we have,” the Germany international said. “You don’t get the good rhythm of all the players playing with each other.”

He continued, “When you come here, you see all the quality on the pitch, the manager we have, staff, you know there will be a turnaround soon. Even on a bad day when you come to CFA, you see staff, the players and everything else around, you get a smile really quick on your face.”

The 32-year-old went on to explain that he believes Pep Guardiola’s squad will soon begin winning games again, as he said, “First of all, no one wants to lose, everyone hates this feeling.

“We created a legacy here and we have the chance now to switch this again and show that we are able to go through a bad phase and get up again.

“There’s too much quality here and I think quite soon we will win games again. We have showed we are able to win a few games in a row as a well.”

Manchester City will return to action following the defeat to Aston Villa with a clash against Everton at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day as Sean Dyche’s squad travel east in buoyant mood following a 0-0 home draw to high-flying Chelsea at the weekend.
