An intriguing new report has focussed on the Territorial Anchorage Index for all Premier League clubs,, including Newcastle United.
Actually, the CIES Football Observatory who have produced this new report, have covered more than 900 clubs in 55 leagues worldwide.
However, using the tools they provide, you can narrow the results down to teams in just one league.
So we have concentrated on only Premier League clubs.
The question you are no doubt asking, is what exactly is the Territorial Anchorage Index?
It is a calculation from the proportion of national players and club-trained nationals among those fielded in the domestic league over the last year.
CIES Football Observatory explain that ‘Nationals’ are players who have grown up in the association of their home club, while club-trained nationals are those who have played for at least three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21 in their club of employment. The index is calculated on the basis of the gap from the general average for these two variables. Data refer to the last year or, for a few newly-promoted clubs, to the current season.
So here are the Territorial Anchorage Index results for the past year (25 March 2024 to 25 March 2025) when it comes to Premier League clubs:
As you can see, Newcastle United at the very top of this Territorial Anchorage Index table.
The bottom line is that this is great news for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United, against all odds he has got NUFC way outperforming what they should be achieving, when it comes to how much Premier League clubs have paid to build their squads and how much their wage bills are.
Eddie Howe and NUFC topping this table above, due to having way more than their rivals, in terms of the combination of how many English players and how many Newcastle United club trained players that have played in domestic matches this past year.
This is something that gets far too little coverage, Eddie Howe achieving so much by concentrating particularly on English players/club trained ones. So many Geordies in the squad as well, so many lifelong fans of the club, far more than of the other Premier League clubs.
