The Greens continue to miss a number of key players for the trip to Ashton Gate, while the Robins have a pair out of action

Plymouth Argyle travel to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City on Saturday, with Wayne Rooney still searching for his first away win as Pilgrims boss.

Tuesday night’s 6-1 defeat at Norwich City sums up the Greens’ fortunes on the road during the 24/25 campaign to date, with just three goals scored, 23 conceded, and two points gained from their nine matches out of Devon since August.

They travel to a City side who will be looking to bounce back after successive 1-0 defeats to Burnley and Watford, who are also without a win in front of their own fans since the middle of September.

One advantage the hosts will have this weekend is the availability of a number of players as they return from injury, while the visitors still have a number of players on the sidelines, here we take a look at who is set to miss out on Saturday.

Bristol City: Joe Williams

Joe Williams looks set to be out for months after tearing an Achilles tendon against Preston North End earlier in November, in one of the only major omissions from Manning's squad for the visit of the Pilgrims.

With Scott Twine returning to full fitness, the City manager confirmed that all players got through the midweek defeat at Vicarage Road unscathed, with attention turning to getting another win under their belts this weekend.

When quizzed about team news, Manning told Bristol Live: “ Everyone came through the game the other night. Twiney's minutes are building up, so he's in a much better place as well.

“They're rightly so, chomping to get going. I think that's the biggest bit. We're coming into such a heavy period, it could be a real strength for us now if we respond in the right way and keep on that even keel between games, not get too high or too low and just make sure that when we get into the next one that we're we're all in again.”

Sam Bell

Manning also confirmed that Sam Bell is close to a return to action after being out of action since August, although the visit of the Greens may have come too soon in terms of his rehabilitation after staring for the under-21 side in midweek.

“[He is] not far away. I don't want to jinx things in terms of how he's looked. He obviously got some minutes the other night which was good for him and he's been training for a period of time now,” the Robins boss added.

“It's a case of we don't want to rush things. It would be great to have him back but we want to make sure that when we get him back we keep him back.”

Plymouth Argyle: Ibrahim Cissoko

Argyle have had a queue out the door for the medical room at Home Park of late, with Rooney unable to pick his strongest lineup for quite some time now.

The Greens continue to have the likes of Ibrahim Cissoko unavailable, with the Dutchman ruled out until the new year with a hip injury, having undergone surgery earlier in the month.

Morgan Whittaker

On top of the Cissoko miss, Argyle also have Morgan Whittaker unavailable for the trip to Ashton Gate, with the 23-year-old having to be replaced during the 2-2 draw with Watford last weekend due to a toe injury.

The latest issues have left Rooney perplexed, with the Argyle boss telling the BBC: " "The injury situation is something I'm looking into and why we're picking up so many.

"It's not just one or two, it's injuries to more than half the starting line-up if all fit, so I think that's where we are.

"We haven't got the squad and that's something we need to evolve over the next few years and get the squad right, try to develop it, but that takes time."

Brendan Galloway

Brendan Galloway has been out since injuring his ankle while on international duty with Zimbabwe back in October, and there is yet to be an update as to whether the former Luton Town man could be in line for a return this weekend.

Having filled in at centre-back and left-back during the start of the season, the defender has not featured since September, with his personal injury hell continuing, with just 45 league starts for the club since arriving at Home Park in 2021.

Conor Hazard

Another of those out on a long-term basis, Conor Hazard was ruled out for three months back in September, and is not ready for action anytime soon.

Having started the season as number one choice between the sticks, new arrival Dan Grimshaw has soon taken over, and with Marko Marosi brought in as backup, the former Celtic man can take all the time he needs to get back to full fitness before competing to be the man to don the gloves in the future.

Joe Edwards

Yep, you guessed it, another player that won't be seen on the football pitch until 2025, such are Argyle's injury woes at this moment in time.

Edwards tore a hamstring in the 3-3 draw with Preston North End back in October, and won't be playing any minutes anytime soon, so it is very much a watching brief for the club captain until Auld Lang Syne has been rattled out across the land.

Muhamed Tijani

Possibly the longest injury layoff of the lot belongs to Muhamed Tijani, with the Slavia Prague loanee ruled out until February with a hamstring issue.

The Nigerian has undergone surgery in October and should be back fighting fit for the run-in, but with a lack of goals throughout the Argyle squad of late, his absence came at the worst possible time, as he looked to be getting up to full speed after a slow start to the campaign.

Ryan Hardie

Ryan Hardie picked up a groin strain before last week’s 2-2 draw with Watford and remains a doubt for the weekend, with Rooney confirming as much in his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

While Andre Gray and Michael Obafemi have been preferred up top of late, the Scot could be a useful option against tiring legs late in the game, with his pace and leggy stride always capable of causing opposition defenders mischief.

Lewis Gibson

Lewis Gibson played the full 90 minutes against Watford last Friday, but the defender sat out the midweek drubbing in Norfolk, as he remained an unused substitute with Victor Palsson filling in.

Whether the former Newcastle United man returns to action this weekend remains to be seen, with Rooney telling the club’s social media account that he will be assessed ahead of the weekend’s showdown.
