The last few days in German sports media have been dominated by the future of Thomas Muller at Bayern Munich. The German forward was reportedly not offered a new deal as the club looks to balance the books ahead of a crucial summer transfer window. Moreover, the recent contract extensions of Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich, and Jamal Musiala have significantly raised the wage bill of the squad.

After Friday’s win against Augsburg in the Bundesliga, Thomas Muller provided clarity about his future on Saturday. The 35-year-old German forward confirmed that he will be leaving Bayern after 25 years at the club.

Muller revealed in the statement that he would have liked to stay at the club for one more season. However, Bayern’s plans were not to offer him a new deal.

Die Roten have extended Muller’s contract until July to make sure he will play in the Club World Cup. Muller will get a testimonial match, and Bayern will certainly have big plans for his farewell.

The German forward has enjoyed tremendous success at Bayern. Muller has won 33 trophies with the club since making his senior debut in 2008. He has excelled under different coaches throughout his time at Bayern. Muller played a crucial role in the two treble wins (2013, 2020). Even though he played less this season, Muller always stepped up whenever Vincent Kompany needed him on the pitch.

Thomas Muller could move to MLS

Muller had previously insisted that he wants to play at the top level at least until 2025. He is not expected to retire from the game in the summer. According to Bild, Muller will most likely play in the MLS from next season.

The German forward will not be short of offers in Europe since he still has the fitness and quality to play at the top level. However, it does look like he may not play for another club in Europe.

The Bavarian faithful will be disappointed with the way Muller’s contract situation has been handled over the last few weeks. However, they would hope to see him end his glittering career at Bayern with three trophies- the Bundesliga, the Champions League, and Club World Cup.

Bayern will have to replace Muller in the transfer market. Bayern are heavily interested in Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The young German star certainly has the potential to succeed Muller at Die Roten. If Die Roten fail to sign Wirtz in the summer, Paul Wanner may get game time with the first team from next season.
