PSG progressed to the next round of the Champions League after beating Liverpool on pens. They won the game at Anfield 0-1 courtesy of an Ousmane Dembele goal to level the tie 1-1 which meant extra time and penalties.
Over the two legs the French champions were the side that deserved to go through. In the first leg Luis Enrique's side had the chances to put the tie to bed but weren't clincial on the day and in the second leg they were bold. Here at PSG Post we discuss three things we learned as PSG produced the result of their season.
Nuno Mendes denied Mo Salah the opener to stop his close range shot. Over the two legs he pocketed Liverpool's best player making him look like an average player. His performances over the two games aren't a surprise as he had been one of the best left backs in the world this season. If he keeps performing like this then the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona may be interested in him next season. What makes him so brilliant is that he is so good on both ends of the pitch, he plays the game like how a fullback should. It's hard to believe that he was close to leaving in the January transfer window.
Arne Slot's side were much better in the second leg than they were in the first leg. In that first game, Liverpool were extremely lucky that Alisson had one of his best games in a Liverpool shirt prior to Harvey Elliot's smash and grab goal. Before Dembele opened the scoring for PSG Szoboszlai had a volley which flew over the bar on the 8th minute.
Moments later Ibrahima Konate tried to make up for his earlier mistake with a shot outside the box which was pushed out by Donnarumma. Diogo Jota had two chances in quick succession in the first half but couldn't couldn't get his header or shot on target. The closest they came to scoring was when Jarrell Quansah hit the post from a corner 15 minutes from time.
Despite it being a close game the French champions had several chances throughout. Throughout the 90 Khvicha could have scored a hattrick and Dembele could have netted a brace. Even in extra time they were unlucky not to score when Doue shot after turning in the box but his effort went wide of the post. Dembele also had an effort in extra time when he tried to curve his effort in the six yard box.
