According to a recent report, Jose Mourinho is keen on a reunion with his former forward Heung-Min Son over in Turkey at Fenerbahce.

The 61-year-old recently said “I look at Son as one of the best players in the world. Maybe Tottenham supporters aren’t going to be happy with what I’m going to say it’s not disrespectful. He could win titles, he could play for the best teams.”

Although there is a club option to extend the captain’s contract, at this moment in time he is free to talk to new clubs as soon as Wednesday –until anything is signed.

TBR Football also reported that the club were not willing to offer the player a new contract (on his own terms), but were preparing to trigger the automatic extension.

They reported that the forward’s camp were not happy as a result. There is little doubt about Son’s service to the club over the last ten years, but it cannot be argued that he is not the player that he used to be.

The penalty miss in the Wolves game was tough to see. Whilst penalties have never been his forte as such, you just had the feeling he wasn’t going to score, a feeling you would not have felt a few years ago.

There are a number of former Premier League players currently playing in Turkey, including Fenerbahce. The likes of Edin Dzeko, Dusan Tadic, Fred, Allan Saint-Maximin, and others, are all at the Istanbul club.

Admittedly, the only player comparable to Son’s level in his prime is Dzeko – who is now 38 – so the skipper may feel it is a bit early.

The lure of playing for Mourinho could convince him, however. The 32-year-old enjoyed a productive spell under the Portuguese manager during their time together in North London.

The South Korean international recorded 54 goals and 70 assists under his stewardship, and the number seven was one of the players to publicly post his gratitude after his departure from the club back in April of 2021. Feels like a long time ago now.

At the moment, it feels like this sort of transfer is in the distance, but it certainly does not feel impossible, or unfeasible.

Certainly, one to keep an eye on over the coming months, particularly as long as the contract extension has not been officially confirmed.
