The goalkeeper’s contract extension could be significant for Barcelona considering the fact that Inaki Pena is almost destined to leave the club in the summer.

The Spaniard has fallen out of favour under Hansi Flick, with no real hopes for a comeback. Keeping that in mind, he could be set for a new adventure elsewhere.

Pena’s departure could leave Barcelona scrambling for a backup for first-choice ‘keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The presence of Szczesny, to that end, could serve as an ideal safeguard for the club.
