The awaited confirmation of an inter-Bundesliga transfer of Maximilian Philipp from Freiburg to Union Berlin is apparently not coming. Kicker reports that the 30-year-old’s move to the German capital has fallen through at the last moment. Freiburg and Union were unable to agree on the specifics of an arrangement to send Philipp back to his hometown.
The unexpected news may have ramifications for at outgoing Union transfer rumoured to be in the pipeline. Die Eiserenen were, according to multiple sources, preparing to offload transfer flop Yorbe Vertessen on RB Salzburg. Florian Plettenberg reported late yesterday that former Mainz, Schalke, and RB Leipzig sporting administrator Rouven Schröder was working on plying the Belgian international away from Köpenick.
Vertessen’s transfer to Union last January was held up due to unforeseen problems in the negotiations with PSV. A €4.75m deal was only officially confirmed well after the deadline. Confirmation of this reported €4m sale may stretch out longer as the transfer deadline in Austria remains open until Thursday.
Reports suggest that a Salzburg medical has been scheduled for today. The collapse of the Philipp deal nevertheless may cause the German club to reconsider. Union have procured attacking reinforcements during the current January transfer window, but have missed out on the chance to procure a true center-forward.
