(Video): Arsenal defender mocks Enzo Maresca who can only respond in one way

Chelsea’s loss against Arsenal today was so dire in terms of quality and lacking in terms of entertainment that even the most minute details have been picked up on.
With just a minute left in the encounter, Jurrien Timber took a moment to mock Enzo Maresca on the side-line as the Arsenal full back prepared to take a throw in. There was an exchange between them – Timber appeared to tell the Chelsea manager to “try harder” before offering him a sarcastic handshake.
Maresca walked away smiling – that was pretty much the only reaction he could give in the circumstances but we bet he wasn’t too happy behind his fixed smile.

We’ll never know the context of what was said, but a handshake before the final whistle has gone is always going to be insulting. If Timber really did tell Maresca he needed to “try harder”, it would have been better aimed at some of those on the pitch. The manager was putting in more paces in his technical area than the likes of Christopher Nkunku were on the field of play.
Maresca is a competitor, and this sort of performance and result will surely be enraging to him. He will defend it in public, as it his wont, but it’s not good enough and he knows it.
The fact that he apologised to the unhappy away fans proves that he knows it. He’s two weeks on the training ground now to get things right – but serious changes are needed. The return of injured players won’t fix things magically, and the increasingly sour mood in the fanbase will linger if the team continue to play like this, even if they do scrape into the Champions League.
