It’s an endless cycle with Chelsea at the moment – blaming the defence for letting in goals, then blaming the attack for not scoring goals to take the pressure off the defence.
That duality was evident in Tosin Adarabioyo’s post match thoughts after last night’s defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup. Chelsea scored early (but thanks to a slice of good luck rather than from carving the opposition open), then went into their usual pattern of retreating and looking passive and unable to create chances.
Tosin blamed his attackers for the team’s failure to capitalise on their early lead:
“We didn’t break them down and create good enough chances to secure the game and we got punished at the other end,” the defender said.
Tosin is considered a real leader in the dressing room, yet clearly he’s not afraid to throw a little but of blame around. It’s certainly true that the attack and midfield could have done more to get a second goal, but the defence looked so shaky too. Tosin had his own thoughts on that too:
“I see it as a lapse of concentration sometimes. We just need to continue to push on and start the game well like we did today, then push that through for 90 minutes,” the defender mused.

The good news for Chelsea is that they face this same opposition on Friday night, so they can immediately make amends for a shocker yesterday:
“Our main focus is now coming back here on Friday. We will analyse this game throughout tomorrow and throughout the week, and we will come back stronger on Friday.”
Going out of the cup in a year where that would be the best trophy we could win is a disaster. Dropping points again in the league would be truly dire.
