Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dropped a major hint that another academy starlet is on the brink of a first-team breakthrough.
Highly-rated left-back Harry Amass has earned a spot in the travelling squad for United’s crucial Europa League showdown against Real Sociedad tomorrow.
Amorim was quizzed about the rationale behind selecting Amass in the 18-man squad.
The United head coach said (via ManUtd.com): “Amass is here today. In the last game against Fulham, we wanted Amass also but, because he played a full game against Arsenal, he was not in our squad.
“We try to manage all the teams and try to imagine the substitutions and we know to bring some players [in] is a big step.
“We are taking care of the expectations of the kids.”
The 17-year-old is one of the most talented prospects in the United academy.
He has regularly featured in first-team matchday squads, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level.
Former manager Erik ten Hag included him in United’s pre-season tour of the United States.
With both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined due to injury, many expected Amass to be given a chance to stake his claim for a spot in the senior squad.
However, the Dutchman overlooked him, citing concerns over whether he was physically ready for top-flight football.
Amorim revealed that he had intended to include Amass in the squad for Sunday’s clash against Fulham.
With Patrick Dorgu suspended for the game, the manager was forced to deploy Diogo Dalot in the left wing-back role.
It’s evident that Amorim holds Amass in high regard and views him as a reliable emergency option when needed.
There were rumours that Amass could be sent on loan in January, but United couldn’t find a club with a compelling development plan for him.
We believe the young prodigy has immense untapped potential and deserves a shot in the first team before the season ends.
Chido Obi has already made his debut under Amorim, and Amass could follow in his footsteps.
