West Ham United are expected to be busy during the January transfer window after a horrendous first half of the season under Julen Lopetegui’s leadership.
The Spanish manager won just six of his 20 Premier League games in charge, leaving West Ham languishing in 14th place.
With the Hammers just seven points above the drop zone, the club were forced into a crucial decision that saw them part ways with Lopetegui after just six months.
West Ham have wasted no time naming a successor, with Graham Potter brought in as the club’s new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract.
The English manager’s first task will be getting past Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Friday.
The club are expected to back him in the transfer window like they did with his predecessor, and a number of players have already been linked with a move to West Ham.
There’s also expected to be a couple of outgoings, and one Hammers ace is already attracting interest from a European giant.
According to Fabrizio Romano, AS Monaco have opened talks with West Ham over a potential loan move for Edson Alvarez.
West Ham signed Alvarez from Ajax in a £35.4 million deal, but the Mexican has struggled to settle in East London.
Alvarez has always left the door open to a potential exit, and a move to Monaco will allow him to play in the Champions League and be a key player in the French side’s project.
It remains to be seen if a managerial change will convince him to remain at the London Stadium, but West Ham may be better off moving him on.
He has been a shadow of the player he was at Ajax, and a change of scenery might be best for all parties involved.
If Alvarez leaves the club, West Ham should turn their attention to Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu.
The midfielder is currently on loan at Southampton, but his lack of game time could force Chelsea to consider their options.
The Frenchman would be an ideal replacement for Alvarez. He has shown glimpses of his quality at Chelsea and Southampton and could be a shrewd acquisition for Potter’s side.
