FLW's Southampton fan pundit has warned against appointing Steven Gerrard.

Following Ivan Juric's sacking from Southampton in April, the Saints have been on the hunt for a new manager ahead of their return to the Championship, with relegation from the Premier League already confirmed.

Different names have been floated about, with Sheffield Wednesday's Danny Rohl currently looking the most likely.

Steven Gerrard is another interesting name in the market, although some reports have stated that he's not under consideration for the role at this stage.

Football League World's Southampton fan pundit Martin Sanders has argued against the move anyway, insisting that his lack of experience in the Championship might mean that he would struggle.

Despite never managing in the Championship, Gerrard has previously managed in the UK, with stints at Rangers and Aston Villa bringing varying levels of success.

His three-year spell at Rangers brought a lot of success, especially when considering it was his first senior job in management. Gerrard won the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership, the first in ten years for the Glasgow club, which remains the only league title that they have won since the 2010/11 season.

Making the achievement even more impressive was the fact that they did not lose a single game across the whole league season, amassing 102 points and only conceding 13 goals in 38 matches.

With almost two-thirds of his matches being won over his time as manager at Ibrox, it was an impressive three years at the club, which tempted Premier League side Aston Villa to bring him in following Dean Smith's dismissal at Villa Park.

While his record in Scotland was impressive, his time in Birmingham served as a cruel reminder of how competitive the Premier League is.

His time in England resulted in a win percentage that was almost half of what he had managed in Glasgow.

Results were inconsistent at Villa and eventually Gerrard was sacked following only two wins in the opening 12 games of the 2021/22 season, just 40 games into his tenure.

"Absolutely not" - Southampton fan pundit not keen on Gerrard's appointment

Gerrard's success at Rangers now feels a long time ago and, with soft links to the Saints, FLW spoke with resident Southampton fan pundit Martin to discuss potentially bringing the former Liverpool player to the club as their new manager.

"Regarding Steven Gerrard, absolutely not. I want someone who is proven at Championship level, who knows the league inside out. He's the sort of person who would bring that aura because of who he is and what he's done," he said. "Managerial wise, he's never managed in that division, which would be my biggest concern. There's a lot of games, you need to understand how you're going to manage that league, how you're going to get the best out of the squad. I'm not sure Steven Gerrard fits us."

Martin then compared Gerrard to Coventry City manager Frank Lampard, as the two England midfielders were often compared as players, which has followed them into management.

"I'm not sure Steven Gerrard fits us. A lot of people talk about Frank Lampard and if it was between the two England midfielders, I think a lot of people would pull towards Frank Lampard, but he could quite comfortably be a Premier League manager next season. But for me, Steven Gerrard, an absolute no."
