Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell has hit the nail on the head with his assessment of current Chelsea right now.

The Blues managed to get through to the semi finals of the Conference League last night by beating Legia Warsaw 4-2 on aggregate but on the night in the second leg, they lost 2-1 against the Polish minnows at Stamford Bridge in what was a shameful and embarrassing performance and result.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea held positive talks to sign Dean Huijsen YESTERDAY!

Chelsea captain even appears to take a slight dig towards Maresca as he admitted that the team did not prepare right for the game in his post-match comments last night.

It looked bad from the start to be honest when the lineup came out. Ahead of a key game to get Champions League qualification on Sunday, Maresca picked a very strong lineup and started big name players such as Cole Palmer, Reece James, and Marc Cucurella in a game they were already leading 3-0.

Maresca was asked about why he picked this lineup and gave an answer that once again insults fan intelligence.

Sidwell was on pundit duty for TNT Sports last night and was giving his verdict on the defeat after the game. He has rightly pointed at a lack of leaders within this group.

Chelsea lack leaders

I think it’s obvious. But Sidwell explains:

“What leaders are there?

“When things don’t go right, who is pulling players in and saying ‘right listen, next 5 or 10 we are going to keep it tight’ or ‘listen, we got wingers we are going to give the ball to you let’s attack’.

“It starts from the manager. it starts from the players. There’s only a few players in world football who can turn it on and off like a tap game to game and these players can’t do that they can’t say ‘we’ll have a night off tonight and come back at it for Fulham’ because Fulham are at it they want to get into Europe.”
