On Saturday evening, we saw Bayern Munich drop points for the third time this season in the Bundesliga as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Borussia Dortmund, in the first Der Klassiker of the 24/25 campaign.

The first half was really poor, though Vincent Kompany's side improved in the second half. If you aren't going to win, make sure you don't lose - and a late header from Jamal Musiala maintained the unbeaten start in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich.

Still, Bayern were clear favourites ahead of the game, and didn't win. Let's take a look at what Vincent Kompany could have done better on the day.

What went wrong from a tactical point of view for Bayern against Borussia Dortmund

Many were taken by surprise when Mathys Tel was handed his first start of the season, with the game being such a big and important one. Kompany opted to play the teenager on the left hand side of the attack.

However, he played him too wide for him to be able to make any impact on the game, with Alphonso Davies tucking inside. We saw under Thomas Tuchel that Tel can play off the left hand side, but not in the way that he was used in the game yesterday.

The reality is that Tel is not a winger. You cannot play him as a wideman and expect him to make an impact on the game. If he is to play off the left, fine - but it must be as an inside forward, not as a touchline winger.
